Across 2020-2021 we worked with ten Victorian councils. We helped them to deliver 11 deliberative engagement processes, build community visions and council plans they could stand behind and comply with the new Act.

It’s 2023. Three years have passed and, suddenly, the second round of deliberation is almost here.

We’ve been having lots of conversations with our friends in local government lately. That’s because many of you are starting to think about how and when to engage with your communities around key strategic documents such as Asset Plans and Financial Plans.

We’d love to help every council in Victoria to navigate this tricky landscape. However, our books are filling fast already, and we can only work one-on-one with a small selection of councils each year.

So, to enable us to provide support to more of you, we’ve adapted and enhanced the short guide we wrote for local government in 2020 and published the Short (Enhanced) Guide to Deliberation for Victorian Councils.

works around key dates including upcoming council elections
connects each phase together and builds on itself logically
helps your council develop plans consistent with other key documents
incorporates wider engagement and gives your broader community the opportunity to get involved.

This isn’t necessarily easy, and timelines could be tight depending on the scale of your deliberative engagement process.

We’ve built this new version on lessons learned from the delivery of 11 local government deliberations in the first round.

It draws on knowledge we have gained through the design and facilitation of more than 40 deliberative processes since 2014, and the ongoing research we have undertaken to measure and understand the impact of deliberation on decision making.

The book also features insights and advice from the local government leaders and decision makers we worked with to deliver those projects.
